From Flame to Art: The Candle’s Story

Lighting the Past: Candle History

The Origins of the Candle: Which Century Did It Begin?

As evidenced by candleholders found in Egypt and Crete that are over 5,000 years old, candles are among the earliest inventions of ancient civilization. During the Middle Ages, candles in Europe were made from tallow (animal fat). According to a tax record from 1292, there were 71 professional candle makers living in Paris at that time.

The Evolution of Candles

The wick of a candle must always be made of cotton thread. The flame is created by the vaporization of the wax, and this cycle continues until the wax is completely consumed.

Today, candles are used in much more diverse and creative ways than ever before. Based on their purpose, they are generally divided into two categories: consumable candles and decorative candles. While the base material—wax—remains unchanged, the burn time, flame shape, and hardness of the material can vary due to added ingredients.

The softer the candle, the shorter its burn time. Burn quality and duration are directly linked to the hardness of the wax and the type of additives used. Candles should always be burned in areas that are free from wind or drafts. For optimal burning, the flame should remain upright and stable—never flickering side to side.
